SET+ Program

SET+ (SET Plus) is a collaborative program that combines two years of academic and technical instruction with two years of related, paid work experience with a sponsor company. Students accepted into the program attend classes two days a week at Calhoun Community College and work three days a week for the sponsor company. The graduates of this program earn an Associate of Applied Science in Systems Engineering Technology.

What Makes the SET+ Program Different?

SET+ students earn a wage while attending college and gain priceless work experience with a leading companies. Over two years, students can earn enough to cover all of a their education expenses. There are also potential grants, scholarships, and financial aid. In addition to the standard SET curriculum, students will receive employability skills, specialized advanced training, and IT industry certifications including CompTIA Security+®, and CompTIA Project+®.

What About After Graduation?

While not guaranteed, there will be opportunities for the sponsor company to hire graduates as full time employees. Graduates of the SET+ program will be equipped with the skills and experience that many companies are actively seeking.

Application Requirements
To be considered for acceptance into the SET+ program, one of the following must be met:

  • Requirements met through one of the following criteria:
    • ACT Scores – Math: 17 or above | Writing: 17 or above
    • Equivalent Calhoun placement test scores 593c18ac56.nxcli.net/placement
    • One (1) letter of recommendation from an instructor or employer
  • Participation in STEM-focused programs is preferred, but not required
    • Clubs or Organizations
    • Competitions or Conferences

Selection Process

Participating sponsor companies and Calhoun Community College will review applications and select the top qualified students to be invited to interview with a panel. Selections will be made following the interview process.

FAQs

What is the SET+ program?

The Systems Engineering Technology Plus program (SET+) blends classroom instruction with on-site experience at sponsor companies in North Alabama. The SET+ program includes a two-year associate degree that combines cutting-edge curriculum, paid work experience, along with learning highly sought-after business principles and best practices.

Why is the SET+ program a great opportunity?

Students can earn as much as $45,000 annually while attending college, which reduces the need for student loans and prepares students for a successful career. SET+ graduates can complete the program with no education debt. In addition, the student will have two years of related work experience to build their resume. The SET+ program prepares graduates to excel in the job market and/or to pursue a four-year degree.

Are there opportunities for raises?

Students work three days a week at the sponsor company starting at a minimum $22.00 per hour. Raises are given based on grades and performance evaluations while working at the company. Students must maintain a “C” or higher in all classes to be retained in this selective program.

What is the schedule like?

  • Students attend classes two days a week and work three days a week.
  • Once accepted into the program, a Calhoun advisor will register students each semester.
  • The SET+ curriculum is five semesters (Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Spring).
  • Students will be working with their sponsor company all five semesters.
  • SET+ classes are held in the MSC Building (Math, Science, & CIS Building) on the Huntsville campus.
  • General education classes are held on the Huntsville campus or online.

Am I guaranteed a job after graduation with my sponsor company?

There is no obligation for the sponsor company to hire you, nor are you obligated to stay after graduation. Several factors are considered.
