Calhoun Shines at the 2025 SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference

Calhoun Community College is thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students at the 60th Annual SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC), held June 23–27, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. As the nation’s largest showcase of career and technical education, the NLSC hosted more than 18,000 attendees and featured over 114 skill and leadership competitions during the SkillsUSA Championships.

We are incredibly proud to share that 14 of the 32 Calhoun students who competed at the national level are bringing home medals—an impressive testament to their dedication, skill, and perseverance. In total, our team earned 6 Gold, 1 Silver, and 7 Bronze medals, representing both Calhoun and the state of Alabama with exceptional professionalism, grit, and grace.

Decatur RSVP  |  Huntsville RSVP

The Alabama Community College System (ACCS) and Boeing have teamed up with Next Flex to host the Flex Factor Final Pitch Event for select area high school classes. The “shark tank-style” pitches were presented on Thursday, May 2, in the Education Training Center at the Space and Rocket Center.

FlexFactor is a learning program designed to inform, inspire, attract, and recruit students into the STEM sector through a project-based learning platform designed to immerse student audiences into the blended worlds of technology and entrepreneurship. The program is integrated into an existing classroom and uses a student-led learning approach to expose students to advanced technologies, business models, and the education/career pathways leading into the advanced manufacturing sector.

For 6 weeks, the students worked in small teams to identify a real-world problem, conceptualize a hardware device to address the problem, identify a target market for the product, and engage in customer discovery research. To guide device conceptualization and business model development, students engaged with industry advisors from Boeing and academic officials from ACCS. During the competition, the student led teams pitched their products to a panel of representatives from Calhoun Community College, Drake State Technical & Community College, as well as representatives from Boeing, NextFlex, and Department of Defense representatives.

Calhoun Community College’s Warhawk Student Ambassador Program is still accepting applications for the 2025–26 academic year, offering students an exciting blend of leadership, community service, and fun. This standout program awards partial scholarships and provides hands-on experience that builds both confidence and professional skills for life after college. There are no age restrictions, and all eligible students are encouraged to apply by the deadline of Friday, June 13, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CST.

This unique opportunity is ideal for Calhoun students who need financial assistance and are eager to lead and grow. The program includes:

  • Earning a partial scholarship (equivalent to six semester hours each fall and spring)
  • Leading campus tours and welcoming new students
  • Serving as the official host or hostess of the college at major events
  • Mentoring fellow students and promoting a strong campus community
  • Gaining public speaking experience and media exposure
  • Building lifelong friendships and a network of student leaders
  • Strengthening leadership and professional development skills

“Warhawk Ambassadors do not just represent the college. They also inspire their fellow students across our campuses,” said Raymond King, Calhoun’s Student Engagement Coordinator. “This program is incredibly popular. In fact, many people recognize our ambassadors even if they do not know them personally. While it is fun, full of energy, and filled with real world experiences that students can carry with them long after graduation, it is also a respected role on campus. Ambassadors serve as the official hosts and hostesses of the college and are highly regarded,” added King.

To qualify for the program, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled full time at Calhoun
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Be a first-year or returning second-year student
  • Have an ACT score of 20 or higher
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Participate in tryouts
  • Demonstrate strong leadership potential and a positive personality

“This program helps students grow as leaders, build confidence, and become standout individuals in their college community,” said Kassie Mathis, Calhoun’s Vice President of Student Services. “It is one of Calhoun’s most exciting student opportunities, and we are looking forward to meeting our next slate of leaders,” added Mathis.

Interested students should apply at 593c18ac56.nxcli.net/warhawkambassadors by the deadline. For more information, contact Raymond King at 256-306-2640.

Calhoun’s Show Band Hits A High Note With National Awards And Feature In Downbeat Magazine

Award winning music program invites passionate performers to join one of the most dynamic college ensembles in North Alabama.

What started as a bold idea just three years ago has now exploded onto the national stage. Calhoun Community College’s Show Band is turning heads in the music world, winning not one but three major music industry honors and landing a prestigious feature in Downbeat Magazine, one of the most respected voices in music journalism.

The ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Matt Leder, earned the Downbeat Student Music Award for Outstanding Performance in the Blues Pop Rock category, a distinction widely regarded as the collegiate equivalent of winning a Grammy. Even more impressive, Calhoun is the first community college in this region to earn a Downbeat Award, and just the second collegiate group in Alabama to ever receive the honor.

“This award is a major milestone not just for our band but for Calhoun as a whole,” said Leder. “Students are getting real world experience with top professionals in the industry. We record, tour, and perform at a wide range of venues. Our students learn by reading music and playing by ear. The best part is, we are just getting started. We are proud of our students and excited for what is to come.”

But the accolades do not stop there. The Show Band also received two Global Music Awards, another international recognition that puts them on a level with some of the most celebrated musicians in the world. The band earned a Bronze Medal Finalist Award, and vocalist Lizzy McCrary also brought home a Bronze Medal Finalist Award for her outstanding solo performance. Calhoun was the only college to be recognized with a Global Music Award in this cycle.

Calhoun President Dr. Jimmy Hodges shared his enthusiasm and pride for the group. “This recognition is a powerful reminder of what happens when you combine talent, passion, and world class instruction,” said Hodges. “We are incredibly proud of our students and of Dr. Leder

for leading this program with vision and heart. They represent the very best of what Calhoun stands for,” adds Hodges.

The Show Band began with just four students and has since grown into three distinct ensembles: the award-winning Show Band, the Popular Music Ensemble, and the Jazz Combo. The program offers full scholarships, real performance experience, and access to a professional network of artists and mentors. Students can earn degrees in Music Technology or follow the music transfer track, preparing them to continue their music education at the university level.

Dr. Leder is currently scheduling auditions for the upcoming season and invites all students with a passion for music to consider joining Calhoun’s growing music program. “If you love music and want to be part of something innovative, creative, and exciting, we want you here,” Leder said. “We are going to keep pushing boundaries, building talent, and making music that matters. As Clark Terry said, we are going to keep on keepin’ on.”

CALHOUN LAUNCHES NEW FACILITY CONNECTING ART AND STEM CAREER READINESS

A Bold Vision for Workforce Training, Creativity, and Collaboration in North Alabama

With excitement and pride in its ongoing mission to innovate workforce development, Calhoun Community College has officially opened the STEAM Imagination Center, a cutting edge instructional site located in downtown Decatur as part of the Alabama Center for the Arts. The new facility blends science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics under one roof.

Located in downtown Decatur, just steps from the Alabama Center for the Arts and minutes from Calhoun’s main campus, the newly renovated two story building is a reimagined version of the former 1970s era Eyster Key building. The transformation represents a $5 million investment in the future of education and training for North Alabama. The revitalized space will serve as a hub for creativity, digital innovation, and cross discipline learning.

“Today is about more than just cutting a ribbon. It’s about opening doors. Doors to opportunity, innovation, and collaboration,” said Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun President. “I like to think of today as a wedding, where we’re marrying the arts and technology. They will no longer exist in separate worlds at Calhoun, as this beautifully renovated facility marks a bold new chapter in the life of our Alabama Center for the Arts site,” Hodges added.

Designed with flexibility and functionality in mind, the STEAM Imagination Center will bring together students from the college’s Fine Arts, Design Drafting, and Computer Information Systems programs. The building now boasts state of the art classrooms, high tech labs, polished concrete floors, a new elevator, upgraded HVAC systems, and energy efficient lighting and windows. A portrait gallery featuring work by local artist Jürgen Beck welcomes visitors on the first floor.

Students training at the new facility will be equipped for a variety of in demand career paths in both technology and the arts, including:

Manufacturing and Engineering Roles:

  • Additive Manufacturing Technician
  • Product Designer
  • Creative Engineering Technician
  • Architectural Drafter
  • Innovative Welder

IT and Creative Arts Careers:

  • UX/UI Designer
  • Animator
  • Video Editor
  • Web Designer
  • 3D Modeler
  • Multimedia Specialist

This new site is the result of a powerful collaboration between Calhoun’s faculty, academic deans, and administrative leadership who identified the need to unify these complementary disciplines. In 2022, representatives of Calhoun visited the Savannah College of Art and Design, which inspired the development of a space that could provide similar cross training opportunities for North Alabama students.

“Dr. Hodges’ goal is to help the college become the best it can be. Calhoun is truly transforming the state by serving people in ways it never has before. On behalf of the Alabama Community College System, we appreciate all of the support you continue to show Calhoun,” said Jimmy Baker, Chancellor of the Alabama Community College System.

The opening of the STEAM Imagination Center comes at a time of rising demand for talent in creative and technical fields. According to a recent Lightcast labor market report covering a 60 mile radius of the college’s main campus, related jobs in the region are projected to grow by 16.3% over the next decade.

“The history of how we got here goes back to 2022, when I was fighting for the bill that helped fund this building, along with the Fine Arts Academy and dorms for the Alabama Center for the Arts,” said Alabama Senator Arthur Orr. “I am very grateful to Dr. Hodges and Chancellor Baker because they understand the importance and long-term impact of buildings like the STEAM Training Center. Decatur has not had a building with a higher education presence until now, and that is thanks to their leadership. Now that Decatur has that presence, it is a major step forward for our community. As we continue to enhance education in Morgan County, I want to encourage everyone to support the arts, not just within these facilities, but beyond them as well.”

The college anticipates the new site will initially serve approximately 75 students per year, with future growth expected as new degree and certificate programs are added, including a planned video game development track.

“Calhoun is proud to deepen its roots in downtown Decatur, a community that continues to champion revitalization and forward thinking partnerships,” said Hodges. “This new training facility stands as a powerful symbol of what is possible when education, industry, and local leadership come together with a shared vision to imagine, inspire, and build a brighter future,” he added.

Calhoun Golfer Takes The National Stage At NJCAA Women’s Championship In Iowa

Decatur, AL — Calhoun Community College sophomore Harper Quick, a native of Hazel Green, Alabama, is proudly representing the Warhawks this week as she competes in the inaugural NJCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship, held May 13–16 at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone, Iowa.

Harper received an at-large individual selection to participate in the national tournament, marking a historic moment not only for her athletic career but also for the NJCAA, as this is the first-ever Division II Women’s Golf Championship hosted by the organization. The event is being held at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) on its Boone Campus.

“Harper is a tremendous student-athlete and a fierce competitor,” said Richard Morgan, Calhoun’s Women’s Golf Coach. “To see her compete at this level on a national stage is incredibly rewarding. She’s earned every bit of this,” he added.

Harper’s invitation follows a standout season in which she was named to the NJCAA All-District Team and earned a 4.0 GPA for the spring semester, which is an achievement that highlights her excellence both on the course and in the classroom.

“We’re so proud of Harper and all that she represents,” said Kassie Mathis, Calhoun’s Vice President for Student Services. “She is a shining example of what it means to be a Warhawk and a student with strong determination, and her Calhoun family is cheering her on every step of the way this week.”

The NJCAA has sponsored Women’s Golf since 1976 and launched the Division I and Division III championships in 2022. The new Division II championship hosted by DMACC at Cedar Pointe Golf Course brings national attention to the growth and depth of talent in women’s golf across the country.

From Self-Doubt to Service: A Calhoun Student’s Powerful Journey to Purpose

For Giovanni Santiano, the journey to becoming a nurse was about much more than earning a degree. It was about finding purpose, proving something to himself, and turning his struggles into strength. This Thursday at 4 p.m., Giovanni will proudly walk across the stage at Calhoun Community College’s commencement ceremony, held at the Propst Arena in the Von Braun Center. He will graduate with a degree in Nursing, celebrating a milestone that once felt out of reach for a young man who once questioned if he belonged in college at all.

This journey began with a simple yet profound decision: to pursue a career in nursing. Motivated by a deep desire to make a difference in people’s lives, he enrolled in Calhoun’s rigorous Nursing program. Balancing academic challenges with personal responsibilities, he demonstrated unwavering commitment to his goal.

Throughout the program, Giovanni faced numerous obstacles that tested his resilience. Long hours of study, demanding clinical rotations, and the emotional toll of patient care could have been overwhelming. However, he remained steadfast, drawing strength from his passion for helping others and the support of his peers and instructors.

“The coursework was intense, and there were times I doubted myself,” he recalled. “But I kept reminding myself why I started this journey. I wanted to be there for people during their most vulnerable moments.”

Calhoun’s Nursing program provided him with a comprehensive education, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on clinical experience. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, Giovanni developed the skills and confidence necessary to excel in the healthcare field.

Beyond the classroom, his dedication extended to his community. He volunteered at local health clinics, participated in outreach programs, and mentored fellow students. His compassionate nature and commitment to service earned him the respect and admiration of both peers and faculty.

As graduation approached, he reflected on his transformation. From a student uncertain of his path to a confident nursing professional, his journey exemplifies the impact of determination and support.

“I am proud of how far I have come,” he said. “This experience has not only prepared me for a career in nursing but has also shaped me into a more empathetic and resilient person.”

His story serves as an inspiration to others considering a career in healthcare. His journey underscores the importance of perseverance, the value of a supportive educational environment, and the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many.

As Giovanni steps into the next chapter of his life, he carries with him the lessons learned and the experiences gained at Calhoun Community College. His dedication to nursing and his unwavering spirit promise a future filled with compassion, excellence, and meaningful contributions to the field of healthcare.

Calhoun Community College’s commencement ceremony will be live streamed at 593c18ac56.nxcli.net. The college is currently registering students for summer and fall semesters and would love the opportunity to help write your success story next.
