Calhoun Warhawks Basketball Makes History: Men’s Team Advances To First ACCC Tournament, Women Earn Third Straight Bid

Decatur, AL – History is in the making for Calhoun Community College’s basketball teams! For the first time since its return in 2022, the Calhoun men’s basketball team has earned a spot in the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Division 1 Tournament, marking a major milestone for the program. Meanwhile, the Calhoun Lady Warhawks basketball team is making their third consecutive tournament appearance, proving their continued dominance on the court.

The tournament, which features the top six teams in the conference, will be held March 6-8 at Spragins Hall on the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus. The Lady Warhawks will take on Coastal Alabama – South on Thursday, March 6, at 12:00 PM, followed by the men’s team facing Bishop State from Mobile at 6:00 PM.

“For a program that was revived just three seasons ago after a 21-year hiatus, both teams making it to the tournament is a testament to the dedication, talent, and hard work of Calhoun’s student-athletes and coaching staff. This is a groundbreaking moment for our student-athletes,” commented AJ Daugherty, Calhoun’s athletics director. “For our men’s team to make it to the ACCC Tournament for the first time since returning, and for our women’s team to continue proving they belong at this level, is incredible. These teams are showing that Calhoun is a force to be reckoned with, and I couldn’t be prouder,” Daugherty added.

Kassie Mathis, Calhoun’s Vice President of Student Services, echoed the excitement, emphasizing the broader significance of these achievements. “This isn’t just about wins and losses; it’s also about perseverance, determination, and the bright future of Calhoun athletics,” said Mathis. “Our student-athletes are proving what’s possible when talent meets opportunity, and the energy around this program is stronger than ever,” she added.

Calhoun Warhawk fans are encouraged to come out and support the teams as they compete for a shot at becoming ACCC champions!

Calhoun Announces New Women’s Flag Football Head Coach and Tryouts

Calhoun Community College is excited to announce Bart Stephenson as the new head coach of its first-ever women’s flag football team, set to kick off in Fall 2025. To jumpstart this historic program, Calhoun will host open tryouts on Sunday, March 9 for students interested in joining the team.

“We are extremely proud to announce the appointment of our very own Bart Stephenson as the head coach of Calhoun’s new women’s flag football team,” said Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun President. “Coach Stephenson’s passion for athletics, extensive coaching experience across multiple sports, and dedication to student-athlete development make him the perfect leader to launch this groundbreaking program. We are confident he will build a strong, competitive team while promoting both academic and personal growth,” Hodges adds.

Stephenson, who is entering his sixth coaching season at Calhoun, also serves as the head softball and intramural sports coach. He brings over 17 years of coaching experience in football, baseball, basketball, and softball at the high school level. A graduate of Mt. Hope High School, Stephenson was a standout three-sport athlete, earning All-State honors in football and excelling in baseball with an impressive .497 batting average and 14 home runs. His collegiate career at Northwest Community College was equally remarkable, where he earned MVP honors with batting averages of .398 as a freshman and .397 as a sophomore. In 2008, Stephenson earned a Bachelor of Education in Physical Education from Athens State University. His achievements on and off the field earned him induction into the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame alongside his father, Elwyn, and brother, Stan Stephenson. Recognized for his outstanding coaching abilities, he was named Coach of the Year by the Decatur Daily in 2014.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been selected,” said Stephenson. “The trust that my director and the college’s administration have placed in me to develop and lead this program is deeply humbling. My aim is not only to recruit a talented and competitive team, but also to create scholarship opportunities for young women striving to earn their college degrees,” added Stephenson.

This Flag Football Showcase/Combine will offer athletes an opportunity to display their skills and compete for full-tuition scholarships to Calhoun.

The tryout details are as follows:

  • Date: Sunday, March 9
  • Location: Calhoun Community College (Building TBD)
  • Check-In: 1:30 PM
  • Combine: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
  • Eligibility: Open to 2025 – 2027 high school graduates

Calhoun will compete in the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) alongside institutions like Shelton State, Snead State, and others. The regular season will feature up to 16 games, promising an action-packed year of competition.

“Coach Stephenson brings an infectious excitement and passion for the sport that I am certain will be felt by his student-athletes. Calhoun Announces Applications for Paid Engineering Internship Program

Revolutionizing Career Paths in Systems Engineering Technology

Calhoun Community College is excited to announce its innovative Systems Engineering Technician (SET+) pilot program. This program provides individuals with the opportunity to earn a degree in just two years while gaining hands-on experience with a leading engineering company and earning a salary. Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2025 cohort, and the deadline to apply is March 15, 2025, at 12 p.m. CST.

According to Cynthia Buchheit, Calhoun’s Dean of Business & CIS, the Systems Engineering Technician+ (SET+) Program is designed to fast-track students into the workforce as highly skilled Systems Engineering Technicians, addressing a critical industry need. Unlike traditional four-year engineering programs, SET+ students earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Systems Engineering Technology in just two years while working for a sponsor company and earning a competitive salary.

The SET+ Program blends cutting-edge coursework with hands-on industry experience. Students attend classes two days a week at Calhoun and work three days a week with their assigned sponsor employer, gaining real-world on-the-job experience. In addition to core coursework in computer programming and database management, students also receive advanced training toward CompTIA Security+® and CompTIA Project+® industry certifications, enhancing their chances of being hired by future employers.

“Our goal with SET+ is to provide individuals with an innovative, accelerated pathway into engineering careers while equipping employers with skilled, workforce-ready technicians trained to meet their specific needs,” said Angela Humphrey, Business & CIS Program Coordinator at Calhoun. “Students will not only enhance their systems engineering technician skill set, but they will also be thoroughly prepared to enter this critical career field in a fraction of the time, meeting the growing demand for their expertise,” Humphrey added.

The SET+ Program is currently offering up to 15 full-tuition scholarships for students accepted into the program, funded through the Institute of Digital Enterprise Advancement (IDEA). Additionally, students will earn a minimum of $22 per hour for their work through sponsored employers, with salary augmentation incentives from IDEA.

“With SET+, we are breaking the mold of traditional education and employment pathways,” says Buchheit. “This program is a game-changer for individuals who want to enter the engineering workforce quickly and debt-free, without having to sacrifice their ability to earn a living,” she adds.

The SET+ Program is also actively seeking new employer partners to sponsor students, providing them with valuable on-the-job training that aligns with their company’s needs. Participating businesses gain direct access to a pool of highly skilled, career-ready graduates while helping to shape the development of future industry professionals.

Employers who are interested in joining the program will:

  • Host students for three days a week in a paid internship role.
  • Work directly with Calhoun faculty to align curriculum with industry needs.
  • Gain the opportunity to hire trained graduates already integrated into their company’s culture.

“The response from industry partners has been overwhelmingly positive. Businesses see this as an investment in their future workforce, and students see it as a fast track towards the engineering careers of their dreams. It’s a win-win for everyone involved,” Humphrey says.

The deadline to apply for the 2025-26 SET+ Program is March 15, 2025, at 12 PM CST. Students and employers can learn more and apply at www.593c18ac56.nxcli.net/SETPLUS.

Calhoun Community College Powers North Alabama’s Economy With A Staggering $802.8 Million Impact

Decatur, AL — Calhoun Community College isn’t just shaping futures, it’s helping drive Alabama’s economy with a remarkable $802.8 million economic impact, according to a comprehensive study conducted by Lightcast, a global leader in labor market analytics. This substantial contribution represents nearly 1.8% of the total gross regional product (GRP) of the college’s service area, which includes Madison, Morgan, Limestone, and Lawrence counties, supporting an impressive 10,627 jobs across diverse industries.

“Calhoun Community College is more than an educational institution; we are an economic engine for North Alabama,” said Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun Community College President. “We are incredibly proud to contribute to the growth and prosperity of our region. Whether students prefer in-person, online, or hybrid learning, Calhoun is here to meet them where they are, offering flexible options for those with demanding schedules,” Hodges adds.

Economic Growth at Every Level

Calhoun’s impact is multifaceted, reflecting the college’s role as an educator, employer, and community partner:

  • Alumni Impact: The college’s alumni generated an astounding $723.3 million in added income for the regional economy in FY 2023-24, supporting 9,274 jobs.
  • Operations Spending: With 915 full-time and part-time faculty and staff, 88% residing within the service area, Calhoun’s payroll of $46.4 million and additional expenditures contributed $58.5 million to the local economy, supporting 1,017 jobs.
  • Construction Impact: Investments in campus infrastructure added $9.9 million, supporting 130 jobs.
  • Student Spending: The spending habits of relocated and retained students contributed $11.1 million to the economy, supporting 206 jobs.

A Strong Return on Investment

For every dollar invested by students, Calhoun delivers $4.60 in higher future earnings. Graduates with an associate degree from Calhoun can expect annual earnings $10,800 higher than those with only a high school diploma, amounting to $421,200 in additional lifetime income.

Statewide Influence with Local Roots

This local success mirrors the broader economic influence of the Alabama Community College System (ACCS), which contributes $8.1 billion annually to Alabama’s economy, supporting 114,043 jobs, or one in every 26 jobs statewide.

“Our students and graduates are working, earning, and reinvesting in Alabama’s communities,” said ACCS Chancellor Jimmy H. Baker. “Businesses across the state rely on them to keep operations strong. No other entity has a greater reach in education and workforce training, and we are committed to ensuring every student leaves our colleges prepared to contribute to their communities, their industries, and Alabama’s economic growth,” Baker adds.

Calhoun Community College remains steadfast in its mission to fuel economic prosperity, foster innovation, and empower individuals to achieve their potential. This report underscores Calhoun’s pivotal role in shaping not just careers, but the very fabric of North Alabama’s thriving economy.

Calhoun Announces The Addition Of Soccer And Women’s Flag Football

Calhoun Community College will expand its athletics program with the addition of men’s and women’s soccer and women’s flag football, beginning in the Fall of 2025. This exciting announcement follows the ACCC’s (Alabama Community College Conference) decision to add women’s flag football to its lineup, making history as the largest NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) state athletic member conference to offer the sport.

The addition of these sports reflects Calhoun’s commitment to fostering student success and engagement both on and off the field. According to Calhoun President Dr. Jimmy Hodges, “This is a transformative moment for Calhoun and our student-athletes. By adding soccer and women’s flag football, we’re creating new opportunities for our students to develop their talents, compete at a higher level, and become leaders in their communities. Athletics have always been a vital part of the Calhoun experience, and we’re excited to see these programs grow.”

The soccer program will include both men’s and women’s teams, offering up to 24 scholarships per team, with additional opportunities for walk-on players. Women’s flag football, which has exploded in popularity in recent years, will offer up to 15 scholarships and provide a pathway for female athletes to continue competing after high school.

“We are proud to offer these exciting new programs to our community and our students,” said Kassie Mathis, Calhoun’s Vice President of Student Services. “Soccer and women’s flag football are not just about competition, but they’re about teamwork, discipline, and providing access to life-changing opportunities. Offering these programs at no cost to the community underscores our commitment to inclusion and engagement, Mathis adds.”

The games will be played primarily at Decatur’s Jack Allen Park through a partnership with Decatur Parks and Recreation. AJ Daugherty, Calhoun’s Athletics Director, added, “Under the leadership of Dr. Hodges, our athletics department has flourished. We are eager to build on that success and bring these programs to life, providing even more opportunities for students in our immediate communities and beyond.”

The Alabama Community College Conference will feature several institutions participating in these sports. Flag football teams will include Calhoun, Shelton State, Snead State, and others, while soccer teams will include Calhoun, Wallace State-Hanceville, and Southern Union, among others. Soccer will feature up to 22 matches during the regular season, and women’s flag football will have up to 16 games, making for an action-packed year of competition.

Calhoun will begin the hiring process for soccer coaches immediately, with plans to name a women’s flag football coach by the end of January. Tryout details will be announced as coaches are selected.

Calhoun Announces Free Annual MLK Program for the Community

Calhoun Community College is proud to announce its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Program, hosted by the U.N.I.T.Y. (Uplifting, Nurturing, Inspiring Togetherness in Youth) Club, on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 11 a.m. The event will take place in the Grand Foyer of the Sparkman Building at the College’s Huntsville campus. This program, which is free and open to the public, celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through powerful speeches, music, and community engagement.

“We are incredibly proud to host this program each year, as it provides an opportunity for our college and the community to unite around Dr. King’s message of peace, justice, and equality,” commented Kassie Mathis, Vice President of Student Services at Calhoun. “By offering this event free of charge, we hope to bring his message of unity and service to as many people as possible, and we look forward to celebrating his life with everyone in attendance, Mathis adds.”

The guest speaker for this event will be Dr. Elizabeth Bowden, Director of Teacher Education Services and Certification at Athens State University. With over 25 years of experience in higher education and community leadership, Dr. Bowden brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the stage. She is also an active member of the Huntsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she has organized programs focused on education and the arts. Dr. Bowden holds a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership, a master’s in Adult Education and Distance Learning, and a Bachelor of Arts in History.

The event will also feature musical performances from the Columbia High School Choir, Miss Calhoun Community College, and Miss Tennessee River’s Teen. Their performances will add to the celebratory atmosphere of the program, which highlights the importance of unity and service.

Ayrian Fletcher, Sponsor of the U.N.I.T.Y. Club and Administrative Assistant for Admissions and Records at Calhoun, expressed the significance of the event, saying, “This event is an opportunity for us to reflect on the profound impact Dr. King had on the world and our community. It’s a chance for our students, staff, and the broader community to come together and honor his legacy through meaningful dialogue, music, and connection.”

This annual event is a key part of Calhoun Community College’s commitment to fostering a sense of unity, service, and community engagement among its students and the greater Huntsville area. Food will be provided while supplies last, and attendees are encouraged to join in the celebration of Dr. King’s legacy.
